Doggust 2022 - #28, Laika
November 3rd, 1957. Historical.
"Laika (Russian: Лайка; c. 1954 – 3 November 1957) was a Soviet space dog who became one of the first animals in space, and the first animal to orbit the Earth. Laika, a stray mongrel from the streets of Moscow, was selected to be the occupant of the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 that was launched into low orbit on 3 November 1957. No capacity for her recovery and survival was planned, and she died of overheating or suffocation hours into the flight."
- Wikipedia's introductory paragraph on the article "Laika"
"Work with animals is a source of suffering to all of us. We treat them like babies who cannot speak. The more time passes, the more I'm sorry about it. We shouldn't have done it ... We did not learn enough from this mission to justify the death of the dog."
- Oleg Gazenko (leading scientist on the Soviet Union space animals experiments, Laika's trainer)
"Now I’m floating free/And the moon’s with me
And it’s bright enough/To light the dark
And it’s so high up here/And the stars so clear
Are they close enough?
Will they hear me bark from here?"
- Jonathan Coulton, lyrics from "Space Doggity"
Concept art training. AI generated imagery + photobashing + 3D modeling + digital painting. Maybe it's because I've been having a bad week, but this one got to me.
